For the Love of Art...Meet My Friend Annie and Artist, May Cao...

Last September, three weeks after I first began blogging, I posted about a friend of mine, Annie and a talented artist by the name of May Cao. Recently, Annie told me May's work is now available in a local studio called, Two Doors Art Studio and Gallery, located in Roswell, Georgia.

I've repeated the post below but have also added additional information at the end about an upcoming "Artist Reception" where those who live in this area will have the opportunity to meet May in person. If you fall in love with May's beautiful creations, as I have, but don't happen to live in this area, take heart...May often paints portraits of people or their pets from photographs.
All May's contact information, as well as information about the upcoming reception, is available at the bottom of this post. Hope you enjoy this "re-post" and find this peek into the world of an artist, her model and the creation of a painting, as fascinating as I did. :-)

From September 2008:
Recently, when I was chatting with Annie, a dear friend of mine, she mentioned she had done a "sitting" that day. I asked what a sitting was and Annie told me she occasionally sits or models for artists here in the Atlanta area.

How interesting, I thought! I asked a lot of questions (LOL) and Annie patiently answered. Annie told me, "Modeling for an artists is generally called "modeling" and the real title of my job (I do get paid to model) is 'Artist's Model'. Annie also said that modeling is sometimes referred to as "doing a 'sitting' and frequently artists will take a photograph of their model so they can continue working on the piece after the session is over.

This photograph of Annie was taken during a sitting by a very talented artist, May Cao, for whom Annie models frequently.

Annie told me, "I have met this very fine artist named May Cao, who simply inspires me. She is a beautiful person and her core being is that of true kindness and graciousness."

Annie continued, "It all began for me when my good friend, Ray, was asked to model for another very skilled artist named, Sandra Anderson. He told me about his new venture. I made contact with Sandra after seeing her work and the rest is history. Rather new history, as I just started modeling for artists in early July 2008. I met May Cao on July 7th at her home, and the result of that very first sitting was the pastel called "Girl In Straw Hat".

'Girl in Straw Hat' is the piece May is working on here:

Annie said, "I became an artist's model because I love art and I love to be around artists. I am inspired when I am in the presence of artists. I am in complete awe of people who can paint figures and do portraits, and the like. It just fascinates me. Bottom line for me, it's an honor to be an artist's model. I don't mind the time and sometimes the pain of an uncomfortable pose."

'Girl in Straw Hat'. was still not complete in the photo below. I find it just fascinating watching this beautiful piece unfold. I, too, am completely in awe of the talent it takes to create such a lovely and enchanting piece.

Annie described her first meeting/sitting with May saying, "Ah....the first time was a joy, and it is still a joy to sit for her and for other local artists." The sitting for 'Girl in Straw Hat' actually took place in the home of May, which Annie describes as being "like a sanctuary...a vacation getaway." Annie said, May "has a lovely home for an artist's painting session" and "it reminded me of Hawaii...very lush with lots of flora and fauna, too!"

That day, a group of five artists, who are all part of The Mable House Art Group, joined May in painting Annie as she posed on a wicker settee in May's home. Annie said, "We met at May's home because the art center was closed for a period of time over the summer, so May opened up her home to host two sessions: July 7th and July 14th."

In the picture below, Annie is holding May's piece and she is surrounded by the paintings of the other artists who were there that day. I just love this pic and Annie is such a lovely model.

I've learned so much talking and exchanging e-mails with Annie over the last few days. Annie told me, "Artists of all levels employ artist's models and most often we attend art sessions in studios where there is proper lighting. All artists need are two things, and that is to paint and to paint often! Many artists prefer to use live models. It seems to help because we're in 3-D, vs. a flat photo."

Annie continued, "I do allow artists to take many photos so that after the sitting they can work on their pieces until we meet again. May, is highly skilled at painting from photographs. I just love to pose for her when time allows because I enjoy her company and I love to see what she is going to make come alive on her canvas."

Annie ended by saying, "In addition to painting consistently, the works that are created in the sessions are often used for artist's portfolios and possibly used for gallery shows that they might be doing, or for juried exhibitions. It all depends on the artist. But all in all, artists need to paint and paint often."

This is the completed pastel of Annie, titled, Girl in Straw Hat. Isn't it gorgeous?!!

Annie also modeled for an oil painting May created titled, 'Kimono'. Below you will see two photos taken during the sitting, followed by a Black and White painting.

May is wonderfully talented and can paint any subject, as shown below in this painting of a cute little white dog.

This one is titled, 'Wolves'. I can feel the cold...stunning!

Here are some additional pieces which show May's unlimited talent and expertise:

'African Beauty'

Beauty and Strength'

A model was not used for this piece titled, 'Butterfly'. Annie said, "this is an image that May had in her mind." Wow, wouldn't you love to be inside May's head for just a day. Just gorgeous!

Portrait of J.S. Bach...

I especially love this piece simply titled, 'Waiting'

A beautiful pastel of Annie titled 'Annie'. May was still working on this piece, at this point.

Can you see the changes being made?

The finished piece...

This lovely pastel caught Annie by surprise. She didn't realize May was working on it until very recently because May created it by using only a photograph she had taken weeks before. May really knows how to capture Annie's soft feminine features...just beautiful!

I thought after seeing all of these lovely works of art, you might be interested in learning more about the artist, May Cao. Annie forwarded the following biographical information, and I am in awe of the journey May has taken to reach this level of talent.

May Cao, professional portrait artist, received her degree and early training from The Art Degree Institute of Liaoning, Shenyang, near Beijing in the Peoples Republic of China. After winning four major awards and working her way through various government levels in the port city of Dalian, where May was born, she moved to New York City and worked as a textile designer and portrait artist and subsequently opened up her own studio in Syracuse specializing in her ability to capture the personalities of famous subjects and local professionals on canvas.

May expresses her gifts in oil painting and in pastels, as well as charcoal drawings. Her work is in the Classical style. She has such a perception for fine detail, her pastels look as if they had been painted in oil. May brings great empathy and compassion to the subject at hand. Her art career of more than 30 years painting and teaching has culminated in a specialty. She is also able to use severely damaged and almost unusable photographs of deceased loved ones to recreate a likeness in portrait form for families to cherish for generations.

May opened up her studio at the Galleria Mall in early 1996. Her deft touch in pastels, as well as oil, can be appreciated in portraits as rich and famous as Marilyn Monroe and football's Jimmy Brown, to those of the average and unknown, including paintings of lively and beloved pets. May has no pets of her own right now, but loves dogs and cats whose companionship she has enjoyed most of her life since early childhood. May came to the United States in 1989, and loves the liberty of expressing herself here without repression and restraint. She resides in Marietta, Georgia with her husband, Ron. May has two grown daughters who reside in Texas and Massachusetts.

When not painting, May relaxes by reading mostly history and biographies of famous artists, writers and musicians. Her second love after painting is taking care of her house plants. May welcomes you to contact her if a portrait or other specialty piece is desired. May Cao can be e-mailed at maycao@bellsouth.net.

I would like to thank both Annie and May, for giving all of us a glimpse into their world, a world that leads to the creation of beautiful and timeless pieces of art.

Changing of the Seasons...A View from the Porch... Welcome to the 8th Metamorphosis Monday!

I am awaiting a metamorphosis. I know it's coming, but I'm afraid I am not waiting very patiently. This past weekend the temps were in the 70's here...oh, what a tease!

I stretched out on the screened-in porch this weekend and looked up...this is what I saw.

I do love this view. It's kind of nice seeing the "bones" of the trees....they really are beautiful against that gorgeous blue sky!

Then my view metamorphosed to this! WUMP...that's the sound of 15 pounds of furry love landing right on top of my tummy! :-)

Now, if I can just be patient one more month, another metamorphosis will take place.

BLUE MONDAY:
I am excited to be participating in Blue Monday!

One of my co-workers shared this priceless pic of her son, Connor, with his new puppy dog. Happy Blue Monday! :-)

Pink "Purse" Saturday!

For this Pink Saturday, I thought I'd share a little Mary Frances handbag I bought a few years ago. It's the only Mary Frances bag I own and it has delicate touches of that sweet color, pink. I always carry a small purse because I don't like the weight of a heavier one. This Mary Frances bag is my favorite for an evening out. You can dress it up or down. It looks great with an evening dress or with jeans...I've carried it with both.

Front view...I love all the little details...like the beading.

Back view... This little bag is covered in a wonderful mesh-type fabric, under which appears to be a silk fabric. I fell in love with it when I very first saw it because it has the look of an antique or vintage piece. (Click to enlarge.)

Mary Frances purses are especially known for their intricate detail work...they are usually covered up in beading...and I do mean, covered up! This bag actually has less than most. I love the pink beads you see here. The other beads you see running all over it are a gorgeous green...they are the same color as the fabric, with which this bag is lined.

More details...do you see the pink in the darling iridescent butterfly? I love the soft colors of all the fabrics used to make this bag...like the little pink flowers under the butterfly.

Isn't this just the cutest clasp? (Click to see the little "diamonds" down inside the clasp.)

This bag reminds me of Mary Poppins's bag because it looks like it wouldn't hold very much, but it's actually very roomy down inside.

It's lined with a beautiful deep-green fabric...hard to capture in a photo. Each Mary Frances bag is a little different since so much of it is hand-made.

Mary Frances bags are available at some Macys stores, Neiman Marcus and on eBay. I bought this one from The Addison Collection online. (Just click on their name to go to their website.)

All the Mary Frances bags have style names, but I can not remember the name of this one for the life of me. If someone recognizes it and remembers, let me know, and I'll add it to this post. I'm sure it's been retired by now since it was about to be retired when I purchased it. I normally remove the dangly 'Mary Frances' name thingy when I use it...I just like the look of the bag without it.

You can access the actual Mary Frances website by clicking HERE.

Tablescaping with Blue Willow: Welcome to the 28th Tablescape Thursday! Tablescaping with Blue Willow

Recently I was asked where I get my inspiration for the tablescapes I put together. I've gotten this question before and truthfully, I'm not sure I have a good answer...the reason being because my inspiration comes from a different source almost every time. If you have participated in Tablescape Thursday a few times, you probably know what I'm talking about.

Sometimes it may be the china itself...perhaps it calls out for a particular theme...the way my beachy china does with its shell and starfish design. Other times, I might be inspired by something I stumble across in my home or while out shopping, that's just begging to be used in a pretty table setting.

I was shopping at good ole Wally World right after Valentine's Day and they had all their potted tulips on sale for $3 each. I don't normally buy fresh flowers because I can't bear to see them dying after spending, what's usually a fair amount of money for them. But these were only $3...even I'll go for that! Though, I was tempted to buy them in every color, I managed to restrain myself and only bought one pot. Once home, I spied a blue and white pot in my garage...perfect for sunny, yellow tulips.

As luck would have it, the tulips fit right down inside the pot...container and all. :-) They became my inspiration for this weeks tablescape...can you guess which china I chose?

Yep, you got it...easy choice...had to be the Blue Willow. :-)

This tablescape is uncomplicated and classic...with its pallet of Blue & White...

Crisp, white, linen napkins fit beautifully with the clean, fresh look of this table setting...

Bet you recognize these little birdie salt/pepper shakers...I think every Blogger in Blogland has a set of these! (LOL) I've seen them on Shelia's table (Note Songs)...ummm...let's see...who else has these? I first spied a set at Judith's, (Sweet Designs) and she was so nice to share where she found them...shhhh don't tell anyone...it was Target. You just never know where you'll find little treasures for your table. This is the first time I've gotten around to using them in a tablescape for TT. I bought these last summer, but the last time I was in Target, they still had some...so it's not too late to snag a pair. :-)

Maybe we should have a "post your Target, white, bird, salt & pepper shakers day," all across Blogland...wouldn't that just be a hoot? We could throw Mr. Linky up and visit all the sites to see all the creative ways they were being used? :-) Ok, I'm off on a tangent...where were we? Oh, yes, we were in the midst of a tablescape. (Hee, hee.)

Friday is Foodie Friday, over at (Designs by Gollum) so how about some actual food for our tablescape! We've had quite the cold spell this week, even got some snow in...of all places, GEORGIA! So, I decided it was time for some homemade soup.

I love a hardy Vegetable Beef Soup and whenever I make it, I go a little crazy...you'd think I was cooking for a family of 10! :-) I pull out the big dutch oven and throw everything in...fresh celery, carrots, onion, potatoes...some stewed tomatoes, peas, corn, little butter beans...and of course good hardy chunks of stew beef from Publix. My soups tend to be heavy on the ingredients and light on the "soup." I love a "stick to your ribs," kind of soup...would that make it more of a stew? :-)

You are having seconds, right? :-)

Ummm...a hardy soup for this cool March evening...

Hope you enjoyed this classic Blue and White table setting!

Front Porch Addition or Renovation... Welcome to the 7th Metamorphosis Monday!

The metamorphosis I would like to share with you today, that of my front porch, was more than just a metamorphosis for my home...it was a dream of mine finally becoming a reality. If you've already checked out the links on my sidebar, you may have seen most of these pics. For Met Monday, I've added a pic I haven't shared before...actually 2. They are of the porch that was the "inspiration porch" for my front porch.

For years I carried around a page I'd torn from an old issue of Southern Homes Magazine. The page showed a picture of a front porch I really, really liked. Periodically, I pulled it out, gazed lovingly upon it, then carefully tucked it back into my "some day" notebook. "Some day" finally arrived in October 2007 and construction began on the front porch. :-)

My front porch isn't a huge porch, or even a fancy porch...but it is a place where friends and family are welcomed and sheltered whenever they visit my home. It's a place where I can "play" with the changing of the seasons and holidays...something I could never do on my old "stoop of a porch," which badly lacked shelter from the elements.

Do you have a "some day" book or file...one that's filled with wrinkled and sometimes drooled-upon, photos...the ones that represent dreams you carry in your head and in your heart? Don't give up...sometimes those dreams finally do come true. :-)

Ok, here it is...the never-before-seen, "Inspiration Photo" from Southern Homes magazine...

What do you think? After you view this metamorphosis, tell me...did my contractor come pretty close to building a porch like the one on this historic home? Note the lantern hanging down in the center of the porch...oh, how I loved that little detail! Each time I pulled this photo out to dream, I could see the hint of a red door. The red door may just be a storm door, but I was guessing the actual door was red, too.

This is a before pic taken after the old brick stoop had been removed and the concrete foundation had been poured. The old pediment was very pretty, but it was beginning to badly deteriorate on the far left end...note the large hole.

A new, larger brick porch has been built. Through this whole process, I was determined to enjoy the holidays...note the fall wreath in the midst of the chaos. (LOL)

Close-up of the herringbone pattern I chose for the new porch...

The old pediment is gone and it's beginning to look a little like the inspiration porch. The shrubs were removed on either side since the new porch is several feet wider than the previous brick stoop.

It's almost Christmas. The old shiny brass lanterns are gone and the new ones have been installed. The columns, my favorite part, are finally in place. Again, I was determined to not let a little construction stand in the way of my Christmas decorating. :-) The painters got busy painting the exterior after Christmas, as the weather allowed.

Before Pic of the badly tarnished/pitted brass lanterns...

New 'French Quarter' lanterns from Quoizel's European Collection...

A tease...are you ready for the reveal? :-)
White basket on door is from Willow Antiques, Too in Marietta, Georgia (770-426-3099); Daisies are from Michaels.

Note the hanging lantern in the center of the porch. The inspiration photo had a hanging lantern, also, and it was one of the features I really loved. Trim was painted a bright white, shutters, black and the door is Benjamin Moore 'Heritage Red'. :-)

So what do you think? Is it pretty close to the inspiration photo below this photo?

Inspiration photo again...I think the porch in the inspiration photo may be about a foot wider, but my contractor felt this was the right size for my home. I'm tempted to add some Chippendale benches, but don't want to crowd up the space too much. Can't wait to get some new shrubs back in on either side of the porch.

The first "4th of July" with the new porch...let the decorating begin! :-)

An evening view...all lit up! Welcome to my home, dear friends...so glad you are here!

Thanks so much for stopping by for the metamorphosis of my front porch! To view some spectacular "Before and Afters," be sure to visit the links posted above.
