For this Sunday Favorites Birthday Celebration, I'm republishing a post from September 22, 2008. It's all about my friend, Gloria, whose blog is, Happy to Be. Gloria has been really sick lately and we've all been very worried about her. Please keep her in your prayers.

First posted September 22, 2008:
A little while back I discovered Gloria, whose blog is HappyToBe, has led a most fascinating life. She has collected some of the most gorgeous antiques you have ever seen! But, there's another part to the story...you'll never guess how Gloria got so many of those beautiful antiques home from the places where they were found. I asked Gloria if she would share this facet of her amazing life and she graciously agreed.

Gloria told me, "My late Husband and I had a Manufacturing Company in Hayward, California. We were right across the street from the Air National Guard and the Hayward Airport. (shown below)

"I was the Girl Friday at our shop, which means I did everything at the shop from typing invoices, doing pay roll, running lathes and mills in the shop, making coffee, and cleaning the men's room, (boy it was great being the owner). When I did spend time at my desk, I would watch the big planes (Air National Guard) and the small planes take off and land all day. Ooooh, how I wanted to be able to fly just watching them.

"Well, after watching these planes for 4 years out my office window and telling my husband about my desire all the time, one day he surprised me and gave me an hour of flying time at Hayward Aviation. Boy, I tell you I could hardly get across the street fast enough to take my first hour in a small plane. Now remember this was only for an hour, I think my husband did this to shut me up about flying...he just knew I would be afraid and then he would not have to listen to me any more. Well, bet me!!!

"I met the instructor named Mark and he took me out to a Cessna 150. I tell you, I was so excited my hands were wet and my heart was beating out of my chest !!!

"I was checking out the instrument panel looking at all the controls, listening to him on the ground radio and then we taxied out for take off, held at 28 Right like ground told us and then tower control came on and told us we were clear for take off. (below, cockpit of a Cessna 150)

"When that plane took off, the thrill I felt was so amazing. We flew all over the Bay area for the hour and flew over the top of our shop. (below, San Francisco bay area)

"He gave me the controls after half an hour, so I could fly and I felt so much freedom! I knew this is what I want to learn to do. OH, THE THRILL !!! When we got back to the airport he gave me my log book with one hour in it and I knew then I would be adding many hours in that book.

"I started going to the Airport twice a week and after only seven hours of flight time, my instructor Mark and I were doing Touch-and-Gos. (A touch-and-go landing is an aviation term, meaning a maneuver that is common when learning to fly an airplane, involving landing on a runway and then taking off again without coming to a complete stop. Repetitions of this maneuver by circling the airport allow many landings to be practiced in a relatively short time. )

"And after only 4 of these he said, "pull over," which I did. He got out and told me, "Ok girl, you're on your own now!" He was going to solo me, but failed to mention this to me until that time! Well, I had been doing radio for 5 hours with both ground and tower, so knew I could do that part. I had been doing take offs and landings but he was always in the seat right beside me.

"So now he offered me my freedom to fly, YAHOO !!! And the most amazing thing...when I took off, I remembered all the instructions of seven hours. I did my go around and landed it all by myself! He signed my log book showing I had soloed. I was 30 years old at the time.

"I did my ground school with 32 guys...I was the only girl in the class. Every Tuesday night, the guys at ground school started calling me Amelia. I passed my FAA Exams and passed my flight course.

"Then my husband bought me my first plane, a 195 Cessna...BIG PLANE!!! (below, Gloria's plane...isn't it beautiful?!)

"It seated five passengers...God, how I loved that plane!

"Both my husband and I loved to go on the hunt for antiques (another passion) so we would take off every weekend and fly to different towns to go antiquing.

"There were times when I know the weight and balance was off for take offs and landings. But oh, the fun I had was unbelievable...being able to fly.

"We had our plane for 14 years and I hated to sell it...but with my husband's health getting increasingly worse, we didn't get to take it out as much. So my husband's one hour that he gave me, turned into 310 in my log book!"

Gloria, thanks so much for taking us along for the ride! What a blast! I got goosebumps just hearing about the day you soloed! :-)

High Flight
by
John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Tablescaping in the Conservatory with Royal Copenhagen, Blue Flower... Welcome to the 87th Tablescape Thursday!

Tablescape Thursday:
I'm soooo happy to be sharing another gorgeous tablescape today with you that's coming all the way from Switzerland! Dear Cornelia graciously agreed to invite us into another one of the wonderful rooms in her beautiful home. Today we will be dining in the conservatory! I love saying that word...conservatory. I've always LOVED conservatories but I've become slightly obsessed with them since seeing Bunny William's conservatory in her book, An Affair with a House.

If you are a little obsessed over conservatories like me, there's a great book listed under my Favorite Decorating Books widget on my sidebar. I believe it's called, Conservatories...I do remember that word is in the title. It's a great book filled with lots of pics of lovely conservatories. An Affair with a House is listed there, too. Warning: Once you see Bunny's conservatory, you will become obsessed, too! Don't say I didn't warn you. :-)

Cornelia, thank you so much for bringing us into your home this week to see this lovely tablescape in your conservatory. Notice the stunning candlelier...is it not amazing??? I have a little close-up of it to share a little further down.

Cornelia told me the table and the chairs are, Empire. I love their warmth and patina...just beautiful!

The rug is a very old Kasak from the Caucassus.

I adore a blue and white tablescape! Cornelia told me the china is from Royal Copenhagen, Blue Flower, curved and a few pieces of Blue Flower, plain.

The Cutlery is silver, made by Jezler (Switzerland), the pattern is called Centenaire.

The napkins are antique and the tablecloth is Swiss from Leinenhaus Berne. There is just something so special about monogrammed linens...absolutely love 'em!

Soooo pretty!

The vase is by Augarten/Vienna...it's so perfect with the china. :-)

The flowers are Lenten Roses from Cornelia's garden. Love their gorgeous color! This so has me longing for a spring garden tour.

What a beautiful, silver serving piece! Johanna believes these are pastry tongs...gorgeous!

Here's a close-up...

This looks like a cranberry server...love the patina...just beautiful!

The candlesticks are by Royal Copenhagen.

The teapot is silver and also made by Jezler.

The sugar bowl is by Jezler; the pattern is called, Rose.

Cornelia told me, "The chandelier is Dutch and antique. Please note that there is no electricity, only candles." I've never seen an antique chandelier like this that was designed for candles. I've only seen reproductions...so it's a delight to see the real thing!

Cornelia, thank-you so much for inviting us into your lovely home! It is such a treat! I am forever amazed and grateful for the opportunities blogging provides. Sitting right here in the comfort of our homes, we can travel all the way to Switzerland and enjoy a beautiful tablescape in a wonderful conservatory, while surrounded by rare treasures and antiques. We are so fortunate and truly blessed!

I'm so looking forward to viewing your beautiful tablescapes this evening!

Beautiful Nymphenburg Tablescape! Welcome to the 86th Tablescape Thursday!

Hi Everyone! Hope you've had a wonderful Wednesday! When I attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, we used to have Wonderful Wednesday every week. On Wednesdays, there were no classes! We were supposed to spend the time studying or attending special lectures, but in truth, most of us slept in and caught up on school work...or goofed off! :-)

Follow-up to Bottle Tree Post Yesterday:
Yesterday, I asked for suggestions on ways to obtain pretty colorful bottles to make a bottle tree for the garden...and you guys came up with lots of recommendations/suggestions. :-) If you are interested in making your own bottle tree, be sure to scroll down to yesterday's post and read the comments. You may even want to book mark that post to refer to later. Or, just click on the title and it will pull up that post alone...then you can save it to your favorites and even print it out. The comments should print out, as well.

Tablescape Thursday:
Any blogger will tell you, one of the very best parts about blogging is meeting dear hearts like you...kindred spirits who share a passion for creating a beautiful table setting that not only nourishes the body, but the heart and soul, as well. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Cornelia who lives in Switzerland! Is Blogland not the most fabulous place?! If not for blogging, I would never have met Cornelia who has generously opened up her beautiful home so that I might share it with you for this Tablescape Thursday.

Step right through these doors into Cornelia's beautiful dining room...

I can't take my eyes off her stunningly gorgeous chandelier! You know I've got chandeliers on the brain lately. ;-)

Cornelia told me, "The china is all by Nymphenburg and hand painted."

The beautiful sterling silver candlesticks are from Mexico.

I love this wonderful tablecloth! Cornelia said it and the matching napkins are Swiss embroidery from the 1950's.

Her stemware is all hand-cut crystal made in the former German Democratic Republic.

If you look closely, you'll notice each dish has a different flower on it. :-) Love that!

The dinner plates Cornelia used for this tablescape are silver plated and are from Robbe and Berking. They are so perfect with the other sterling pieces which include her flatware, candlesticks, a basket and Hors’d’oeuvre dish.

Beautiful!

Cornelia's sterling flatware is Chantilly by Gorham.

Her centerpiece makes my heart skip a little beat! :-)

Cornelia used a gorgeous Meissen vase for her floral arrangement of tulips. Isn't it about the most beautiful vase you have ever seen?!

A view from one end...

I know you are dying to hear about the beautiful furniture in Cornelia's dining room. Cornelia told me, "The table and the chairs are Biedermeier, from around 1820.

The chest is Swiss Baroque from around 1770.

And, the cupboard is Louis Philippe (about 1830 – 1850). The rug is an antique Bochara (caucausus).

Cornelia, thank-you so much for this delightful treat! How wonderful to see your beautiful dining room...and in Switzerland, no less! I enjoyed this so much! Cornelia shared some pics of other tablescapes...I'll be posting those at a later date. Oh, how I love Tablescape Thursday!!! :-)
